The ‘Excuse Me’ Project in Lockdown 2020

The Excuse Me Project exhibiton planned for July 2020 has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and will now be held at The North Wall Gallery in Oxford in February 2021.

Excuse me. Can I take your picture? What’s your name? What do you do for a living? Where are you from? The simple premise of a project.

Obviously doing a project about meeting people has been impossible during lockdown. However, now that restrictions are easing a little I’ve started documenting people in my village as well as in surrounding villages – whilst observing all social distancing guidelines of course! As well as the usual ‘Excuse Me’ picture information I’ve made what I request a little more place and person specific by including how long they’ve lived in the village as well as something interesting about them or something they’re proud of. I wanted to make pictures that show the people in a place and that, if you just take the time to ask, you can find out a little bit about them.

This page is devoted to these local pictures. The usual ‘Excuse Me’ pictures are here and there’s a more detailed description of the project on that page as well.

Drop me a line if you’d like me to do pictures like these for your city/event. A unique set of images about the people there.

No real posing or direction just a pure, honest, simple portrait. These people weren’t expecting to be photographed today. There’s an honesty in the way they look. No special preparation for a photo, just a normal day, just a normal person, just a slightly unusual request from me – can I take your photograph?

Hopefully the brief interaction I had with the people who posed for me will be remembered too. A funny story to tell their friends? An eye opener to an artistic project? Who knows but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and thank you to everyone who posed for me.
